Daytona Beach  Turkey Rod Run 2008 – Pt 1

We were fortunately enough to find some free time around Thanksgiving this year to get away for a few days.  My husband is a Mopar lover and already has 1 in the stable — so I thought he would thoroughly enjoy a car show. Having heard about the Turkey Rod Run, I decided that it was high time to check out the big  fun and we were not disappointed !!

We had a great time and I have to admit that the car show at Daytona International Speedway was the biggest car show that I had ever been to. It was well beyong my imagination. I had heard that 5000+ cars were registered 2 weeks prior to the event.  So 5000 cars, does that sound do-able to you? It did to me too, but I learned a very important lesson  — it would take me 3 days to walk down 5000 cars.  I now have a 1000/car/day limit. You lust loose appreciation after 1000.

We pulled into town and decided to have a libation the “The Wing House” and the parking lot there was nothing short of a small car show.  This was gonna be a great weekend,  other than the fact that wings were about 1 hour away when we walked in the door — I guess hitting the restaurants close to the track requires patience. We had spent too much time traveling and decided to continue to the beachside.

Our trip to Daytona International Speedway was on Saturday. It was nice to see the familiar sites from our frequent trips to the Daytona 500. The day was perfect — sunny, breezy and warm. Nothing like the 10 degree weather back in Chicago….

Perhaps it was the beer , perhaps it was the sunny in our eyes, we actually entrtained the though of getting a 2.5 ton Army Green Jeep.

Apparently this is a great location for the “project guy” to sell his current project and purchase his next project. We saw many, many FOR SALE signs this year and prices were very reasonable. We heard that it was a very slow year for car sales.

Do you remember your first car, when you were able to get that first taste of freedom. I loved that feeling and this was my first car — only I have a white landau roof. One of these days I will get another the 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix, I entertained the thought of asking what he wanted for this, but I am not big on impulse purchases. I was 17 and one of the few girls that had worked and could actually afford to have their own ride. Mine was cool. Really cooolll…. I loved that car……

There was on of each in every color. Your problem would be picking your very favorite.

LOVE Old Chevys — My favorite?? 57 Chevy Bell Aire in Candy Apple Red. That’s also on my list of cars to get…Some people have a bucket list, I have a car list….

We walked and walked and … well saw as many cars as we could. There were cars as far as the eye could see. I was really impressed and the weather was perfect, which alsways helps — as most people will not take their old muscle car out if the weather is bad.
